QUESTION
1. Describe what you see.- In this image, I see
a lonely soda shop among empty areas. I notice
that the windows and doors are closed up, and the
patio area is grown over with grass. This shop
seems to be in a decrepit state.
2. What is the physical setting?- The physical setting
is a dry area with grass and few trees. From the image,
I can tell that it's a sunny area.
3.What, if any, words do you see?- The few words I
see are advertisements for products that this shop was
trying to sell before it closed down.
1. Why do you think this image was made?- I think this image
was made to show how many shops had had to be closed down
during the height of the Depression, and that even little stores
like this that should have been popular with children, had to shut
down.
2. Who do you think was the audience for this image?- I think
the audience for this image would have been the U.S.
government. It might have been trying to be a powerful image
that the economy needed help.
3. If someone made this today, what would be different?- A
thing that would be different is that the building would not be
surrounded by empty land. The area would have been
completely urbanized.
What do you wonder about...
1. Who?- I wonder who was unfortunate
enough to have lost their source of income,
as this shop was clearly a small, locally
owned one.
2. When?- I wonder when this photo
was taken, the beginning or height of
the Depression?
3. Why?- Why did the shop close
down? Was it because no one could
afford to shop there, or were the prices
for stock items too high?

QUESTION
1.Describe what you see.- I see a woman
laboring in the fields of a farm alone. She isn't wearing
shoes, and must be working in the sun because she has
a hat on to protect her eyes.
2. What people and objects are shown?- The
only person shown is the lone woman using a shovel
to dig up crops.
3. What is the physical setting?- The physical setting is a
farm near Eutaw, Alabama.
1. What’s happening in the image?- In this image, a lone
woman is working on a field, shoveling dirt to unearth plants.
2. If someone made this today, what would be different?-
There would not be a woman working the fields with just a tool.
There would be lots of machinery involved in the picture of this
farm.
3. What would be the same?- A thing that would be the same is
that it would only be one person working, because with machinery
many people would not be required.
What do you wonder about...
1. Who?- I wonder who this woman
is. Is she part of a group that travels
from place to place working on farms
as migrant workers?
2. What?- What is the tool she's
using? Is it a shovel or a hoe? Is
she tilling or harvesting?
3. Why? Why is she working alone?
Can her employers not afford more
workers?

QUESTION
1. Describe what you see.- I see three men sitting on
a storefront talking to one another. They seem to be very
casual, and are dressed relatively well.
2. What do you notice first?- What I noticed first was
that all of their clothes are in very good condition. Unlike
other photos of African American men, their clothes are
all clean and they are wearing shoes.
3. What people and objects are shown?- The people that
are shown are four males. There are three in the
foreground, and one behind them.
1. What’s happening in the image?- In this image, three men
are sitting on the side of the street and enjoying a chat. They
seem to know each other, based on their more casual stances.
2. What can you learn from examining this image?- From this
image, I can tell that people talked among social classes often.
While all of these men are dressed well, one is clearly not as well
dressed. He is the one wearing the overalls.·
3. If someone made this today, what would be different?- If someone
made this today, the image would be entirely different. It might not
even have been created, as today people are too busy with their
jobs and other "important" activities to sit down and enjoy life.
What do you wonder about...

1. Who?- Who are these men? In a
time of depression, how can they chat
so casually?
2. What?- What are they discussing?
The man in the center seems to be
very into the conversation.
3. Where?- I wonder where exactly this
is. Is it in front of a popular store,
because they all happen to be there?

QUESTION
1. Describe what you see.- I see a busy street
occupied by several clothing and pawn shops
labeled "For Colored Only".
2. What people and objects are shown?- The only
people feature in the photograph are colored people,
which are what the stores on this street are serving.
3. What, if any, words do you see?- The words I
see that are most noticeable to me are the words
"For Colored Only". In a time when everything was
segregated, it seems odd to me that whites would
not be allowed somewhere.
1. What’s happening in the image?- In this image,
several African Americans are standing around a shop that
is exclusively for them.
2. Who do you think was the audience for this image?- I
think the audience for this image was African Americans. It
could have been featured in an advertisement for this store, to
show how popular it was.
3. If someone made this today, what would be different?- It
would be different because there would not be any
segregation or mild racism in the way this store was run, and
everyone would be able to go in the store.
What do you wonder about...
1. When?- What time during the
during the Depression was this?
Because this is a pawn shop, it
seems that it would be when the
economy was at its worst.
2. Where?- What street is this
on? The sidewalk seems abandoned
except for the men in front of it.
3. Why?- Why is this one shop so
busy? Does it have low prices
and the men shopping here have
been hit hard by the Depression?

QUESTION
  1. Describe what you see.- I see a street with a cafe
on it. The cafe has two doors, one for whites to enter and
one for colored people to enter.
  1. What people and objects are shown?- There is a
woman standing in the window of the shop. There are two
cars parked in front of the restaurant on the street.
  1. What, if any, words do you see?- Some words I see
are advertising the cafe, Farmer's Cafe, low prices on
hot dogs, hamburgers, and lunches.
1. What’s happening in the image?- In this image, a woman
is working in the window of a cafe.
2. If someone made this today, what would be different?- If
someone made this today, the prices in the window would
be much higher. Also, there would be no different doors
for blacks and whites.
3. What would be the same?-Some things that would be the
same are the cars parked along the steet.
What do you wonder about...
1. Who?- Who is the woman in the
window? Does she work at the cafe, or is
she a client that's come for a "quick lunch"?
2. Where?- I wonder where this cafe is.
It seems like it's a very dusty and dry place,
as the car on the left is dusty.
3. Why?- Why is the car on the left so
dusty. Also, why is the door on it open?

QUESTION
1. Describe what you see.- In this photo, I see
a lot of white people at a bar. They seem to not
be aware that a photo is being taken, as they all look
surprised.
2. What, if any, words do you see?- One sign I
see is "Positively no beer sold to Indians". I can't help
but wonder what that means. I've seen it in other photos
in the collection, and don't understand it.
3. What other details can you see?- Some other details
I notice are that the bar is crowded. In a time of
Depression, I would not expect it to be busy.
1. What’s happening in the image?- In this image, many
caucasians are enjoying a party at a bar.
2. If someone made this today, what would be different?-
What would be different is that everyone would be posing for the
camera, as is the custom, and they would be smiling.
3. What would be the same?- Some things that would be the
same are that not everyone would be talking to each other, even
though they were all at the same place, just like the picture.
What do you wonder about...
1. What?- What does that sign mean?
What does it refer to?
2. Where?- Where is this bar? Is it in
the south, where racism is most prominent
, and therefore explaining the sign?
3. Why?- Why was there a party at
this bar? Was there a significant event on
this day?
